They were the subsequent step in motorbike evolution after the “bobber”. The bobber took place after American troopers returned residence from World Warfare II. While they remained loyal to the Harley Davidson company, riders that had served oversees simply weren’t fairly happy with the machines the company was producing. These riders remembered the motorcycles they had seen in Europe that have been more lightweight and more exciting. Most hade been educated to work on motorcycles and automobiles within the service. They began to get together and speak about improvements. <br />To make the bike lighter, riders began removing or shortening the fenders. The entrance fender was often eliminated utterly, whereas the again fender was made short sufficient to only defend the passenger from mud and water thrown up by the rear tire. That is where the term bobber came from. Riders continued to make changes or customizing their bikes and finally the “chopper” was born. Their authentic purpose was for grime monitor racing. <br />The time period chopper comes from the method of chopping. Riders started chopping off any part they felt was unnecessary. This included windshields, front fenders, huge headlights, crash bars and massive seats. The usual massive footrests have been replaced with forward-mounted foot pegs. The gasoline tank was made smaller. This made the bike lighter. <br />Next, riders began raking the entrance end of their choppers so that the angle of the fork to the bottom decreased allowing for a rise in the wheelbase. Additionally they raised the handlebars and known as them ape hangers. <br />Anything that was thought too massive or pointless was both made smaller or removed. The entrance tire was made small; the rear tire was made fat.
