U.S., Germany, Japan top FIFA women's rankings
NYON, Switzerland, Aug. 2 () -- Germany, even after winning Euro 2013, lost ground to the No. 1-ranked United States team in the FIFA women's soccer rankings, which were updated Friday.Germany won the Euro 2013 tournament -- for a sixth consecutive time -- but needed two saves by goalkeeper Nadine Angerer on penalties to secure a 1-0 win in the final against Norway. The FIFA women's rankings factor in actual game results, so higher-ranked teams need one-sided wins to gain points. As a result, the Germans have 10 fewer points this ranking period while the United States inched closer to the all-time points record (2,234 by Germany in 2005).The United States has 2,229 points and extended its run at No. 1 in the rankings to 5 1/2 years. The U.S. team is 9-0-2 this year.Japan remains third with 2,072 points followed by No. 4 Brazil (2,042). Sweden (2,028) continues to hold down the No. 5 spot and France is sixth with 2,020.England loses 61 points in the rankings and drops from seventh to No. 11, allowing four teams to show Top 10 gains. Canada (1,christian louboutin uk,982) moves up one place to seventh while Australia, up two spots, and North Korea, up one, michael kors handbags outlet, are tied for eighth at 1,956. Norway, with the strong Euro 2013 showing, is 10th with 1,953 points, 15 more than England. The FIFA world rankings are determined by points awarded from match results in a three-year period, with more recent games given greater weight. Teams get additional points for playing relatively strong opponents. The next FIFA women's ranking update is scheduled for Dec. 13.
