Celtic manager Gordon Strachan believes his team will have grown
up after knocking Spartak Moscow out of the UEFA Champions League
on penalties on Wednesday.
In an epic battle in Glasgow, the Scottish champions eventually
saw off the challenge of the Russian side after 210 minutes of open
play, by winning their first ever penalty shoot-out in the
competition.
Celtic's win in the two-legged, third round qualifier means
they join Old Firm rivals Rangers in the group stages of the
Champions League and guarantee themselves a windfall of around
£10m.
With the majority of Strachan's side under the age of 25 the
Celtic manager says their abilty to withstand the huge pressure of
Wednesday's game demonstrated they can succeed at the top
level. "We have a young team and we said at half time it was
not going to be a test of their abilities it was going to be a test
of their mental strength," he said.
"A couple of our players didn't play to the standard
that was expected of them and I said at half-time - 'forget
about ability this is about your http://innovis.org.uk/breedingproducts/sheepfecpak.html mental strength'. If the
players who weren't at their best in the first half had dropped
again in the second then what can happen is the rest of the team
drop with them.
"But they got themselves up and were mentally strong which
meant the rest of the team were not allowed to drop below that. We
then had a platform to build on and we had a fantastic period when
we could have finished the game."
Strachan added: "At the end the players commented on how
good Spartak were. We couldn't have got a harder team at this
stage of the competition, but we dealt with it and our young
players will now be mentally stronger."
In what was an action http://www.theprytania.com/Prytania%20Menu.html packed match, Australian international
Scott McDonald had put Celtic ahead in the 27th minute before
Spartak's Roman Pavlyuchenko equalised before the break world cup jerseys to make
the score 2-2 on aggregate.
Pavlyuchenko had earlier missed a penalty, as did Celtic's
Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in extra-time, and the
Russian side were reduced to 10 men at the end cheap soccer jerseys of regulation time
when Martin Stranzi was sent-off.
Celtic's Polish goalkeeper was eventually the hero - saving
to penalties from Edor Titov and Maksym Kalynychenko - but he had
to be separated from his own teammate Lee Naylor when the two were
involved in a shoving match on the stroke of half-time.
The supporters of the team have enjoyed some fantastic European
nights at Parkhead in recent seasons - beating teams like Juventus,
Porto, Barcelona and last season Manchester United and Benfica in
the Champions League.
However, Strachan rates the Spartak match as the best since he
arrived more than two years ago. The Celtic boss said:
"We've had some great games here over the years but
Wednesday's was a cracker.
"The Man United game, for various reasons and because they
are one of the world's best teams, was terrific. I thought the
Benfica performance was absolutely fantastic, but the Spartak game
to me was something special. You had everything involved in that
one.
"There was great football, silly football, sendings off, it
had goals, the penalty shoot-out - everything."
Although Vennegoor of Hesselink missed a penalty in the second
period of extra-time he stepped up to score from the spot in the
penalty shoot-out - along with Gary Caldwell, Derek Riordan and
Polish striker Maciej Zurawski.
Japanese international Shunsuke Nakamura was the only Celtic
player to miss when his effort struck the crossbar.
