After 42 years in business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], The Good Sport sporting goods and clothing store on Bank Street is closing its doors in New Milford.
Owners George and are bowing to the economic factors that have made keeping the business open an impossibility, they said.
"Our target date for closing is April 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," George Walberg said. "It was a hard decision. We'll miss the camaraderie of our customers, who have become our friends."
Walberg said The Good Sport is not so much going out of business itself, but rather finding itself in a position where its suppliers have gone out of business.
"The marketplace is different. Big suppliers don't want to fill small orders for small shops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "Ask any retailer. And online sales have taken their toll."
The Walbergs' daughter, Marilyn, who helps run The Good Sport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is sad to see the store close.
But she said she has "several possibilities" for the future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Right now, I'll be taking some time off and enjoying my horses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said. "My mom and I will be riding more."
Everything is being sold at "rock bottom" prices, George Walberg said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from top-of-the-line sports clothing to the vintage sports equipment that has been part of the decor of the family business for years.
"We have a lot of old fishing lures that are very collectible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and old baseball gloves, too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Barbara Walberg. "The gloves are 40 or 50 years old. They're all leather, and a lot smaller than the ones they use today."
The store also has some "original Converse sneakers," she added, saying they must be close to 35 years old.
Over the years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], best sellers at The Good Sport included items such as pocket knives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], camping gear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], baseball equipment, and footwear.

"I understand the economic times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I wish things could be otherwise," Roberts said. "I bought my first Sven-saw there when I was 19. It's sad to see them go."
