Saving money is good for your social life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Please don't call me a cheapskate. A little old-fashioned thriftiness can do more than pinch pennies in tough economic times. Saving money can be fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], energizing and quite easy.
Here are a few of my favourite ways to save money and have fun doing it.
The clothing swap: Women of all ages - friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], co-workers, neighbours and relatives - bring unwanted items, including clothes, handbags,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jewelry and shoes, to the host's living room, with space for trying on. At some parties, guests are asked to display the item and tell a story about how it was acquired. Along with a bit of wine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the laughter definitely flows.
If you regularly buy a magazine, subscribe instead. Forty-seven issues of The New Yorker cost $90 per year, versus $6.99 plus HST per issue at the newsstand - about $350.
Buy a couple of extra turkeys when they're on sale to have feasts in February and March. A $20 20-pounder is good for a staggering number of fresh and frozen meals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether with fresh root veggies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spiced in stews or atop pizza.
Play "potato fairy" with a neighbour. Take turns buying giant bags of produce and leaving a half-bag at their door.
Put a $10 limit on gifts among friends and include home-made yummies, beautifully replanted plants or re-gifting something nice they've commented on. If you find something you're sure a friend would love in a thrift store, check first to make sure they don't prefer new merchandise only. Don't repel your friends to save a few bucks.
Victoria must be a Canadian capital of second-hand stores. Get a friend on board to help with the heavy lifting and gather up items in excellent condition - clothes, kitchen items, books, small furniture, artwork and even curtains.
Don't bother with so-so merchandise.
If a small group of friends regularly shares birthday meals out together, try rotating at-home dinners for a year. The birthday celebrant chooses the menu and the others make it happen, from appies to wine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], main course and dessert.
Buy a picnic backpack with unbreakable dishes, cutting board,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cutlery, ice pack and Thermos. In good weather, it's quick to pack and transport cheese,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crackers, fruit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cookies and coffee for a gourmet feast on a peak spot or waterfront cove.
Local restaurants with beautiful views can be a mini-getaway on winter weekends. Enjoy three long lunches for the price of one dinner in the dark.
Attach store receipts to the fridge with a magnet. If an item goes on sale within seven days, you've already got it in the right size and colour but can go back for the discount.
Make a habit of leaving price tags on clothing or household items for a week after purchase. You can admire them while checking whether they're too similar to items you already own and return them if they are. How many jeans, black sweaters and shoes can you wear?
A truly thrifty friend tells me to skip stores entirely if you don't need anything. I can't go that far,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Victoria has superior DVD rental places. But when you're not feeling picky, check out DVDs at the public library. Even the latest releases are free for three days and you can reserve several and be surprised at which shows up first.
If you send a lot of cards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], buy a box of 20 art cards for $20 in a bookstore or card shop - as long as you love them. Munro's Books remainders some of its $5 cards for $1 to keep shelf space current and has a large array of gift-worthy sale books for a fraction of their original prices.
Take advantage of rainchecks for pricey grocery items. Taking a minute to get a raincheck lets you pick up the bargain next time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
When you save money this way, it's easy to tip people who don't expect it and really deserve and appreciate it: the person who fills all your tires when it's pouring rain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the recycling guy working on Boxing Day or the ticket taker in a parking garage.相关的主题文章:
