Phil Jackson Provides Leadership for Gifted
There is a common held belief that it's simple to win a professional basketball championship when the roster holds the most talented basketball players on the planet. The primary task is always to be visible on time, keep the basketballs inflated and unveil the balls for practice. The championships are a "given".
Phil Jackson, the current coach of the La Lakers, has heard this argument for decades. Jackson had Jordan when he coached in Chicago. Who could not win with Jordan, perhaps one of the greatest basketball players in NBA history? It might be noted that Jordan never won a professional basketball championship before being coached by Jackson.
After numerous championships in Chicago, Jackson chose to coach in Los Angeles. And again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jackson won championships there. The argument continues to be Jackson has had two of the very best basketball players on his roster in Los Angeles. Who couldn't win with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in the lineup? Shaquille O'Neal, despite his struggles at the free throw line, continues to be probably the most talented big men in NBA history. And Kobe Bryant continues to be when compared with Michael Jordan. Bryant has already established the reputation to be one of the best "closers" in basketball. The idea is that Bryant will discover a way to win, when the game is close in the ultimate minutes from the fourth quarter.
It may be noted that neither Shaquille O'Neal nor Kobe Bryant had won a professional basketball championship before being coached by Jackson. Shaquille O'Neal's newbie in the NBA was the 1992 - 1993 campaign. He won his first championship in 1999 - 2000 season, on the Lakers team coached by Jackson. It was not a simply journey to some championship.
LeBron James currently is known as among the elite players within the NBA. He was acknowledged as the NBA's rookie of the season in 2003-2004 and, this year, he was named as the NBA's most valuable player. It was the 2nd consecutive year that James continues to be awarded that recognition. LeBron James hasn't won an expert basketball championship. It will not happen this year either, having a second round elimination as a result of the Boston Celtics.
Now, with LeBron James as a free agent, there's endless speculation on whether he'll stay in Cleveland or seek a championship in another city. The assumption is the fact that Lebron, together with another star basketball player on the team, will result in championships. Plural. LeBron James is anticipated to provide multiple championships. That appears to disregard the fact that the NBA championship eluded a lot of elite athletes. Basketball, despite an elite player, remains a team game that needs the contribution of the strong starting five and dependable bench players.
Just having LeBron James on the team will not guarantee a championship. As the fans in Cleveland know, it can lead to significant disappointment. Championship teams are made during the seemingly endless games from the regular season. The long 82 game regular months are where championships are forged and talented, egotistical men buy into a system. The team learns to rely upon a coach and in something.
It's unfair to James to say that his presence on a team makes it an odd-on favorite to win a championship. Even men as talented as Jordan, Bryant and James eventually want that leadership and structure. They learn that talent alone cannot win a championship. It is keeping that ego under control leading to championships. And sometimes squelching one's ego is difficult,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], particularly when the majority of the input from the very early age continues to be about your individual greatness.
There's a chicken-or-the-egg quality to this argument. Jackson only won titles with Jordan or Bryant. Jordan and Bryant only won titles with Jackson. Which is the primary reason?
I just think it is fascinating that the combinations that include Jackson have rarely failed. There are so many great player/great coach combinations in most sports that lead to playoff failure far more often these days. Not being in the locker room, I'm not sure what Jackson's magic touch is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but his teams always seem to play with the most confidence.
Cranky, I think it is a matter of personnel management. Further, I think Phil Jackson has surrounded himself with excellent assistants. It's baffling why Tex Winter isn't within the Hall of Fame. Taking care of that surprises me about Jackson is the fact that he is so calm once the situation is dire. Further, he is able to be fierce together with his players once the mistake seems mild. Perhaps it's his skill to choose the moments. And that i don't discount great fortune (lucky) in the results.
OES, it's curious that more and more people see Jackson as arrogant. I view him as rather shy and somewhat socially cumbersome. No doubt that he is bright. I don't think the La media appreciates him. That may come when he's finished his contract in Los Angeles and becomes a fond memory. In sports, that takes about 6 months after the fact.
Nothing, but nothing kept Michael Jordan's ego under control. His ego, which the sports guys like to call his "will," was his greatest weapon. And as for "structure," it had been he, not Jackson, that imposed it upon his Bulls' teammates. Jordan made Paxson and Kerr the truly amazing role players they became by telling them exactly what to do.
For Lebron, his issue is not really a insufficient leadership. It is a flaw in his game. Tremendous from beyond the 3 point arc and all but unstoppable one-on-one inside, he has a under stellar mid-frontcourt game. He simply doesn't command the region round the key like Bird, or Magic or Kobe or Dwayne Wade or Thomas or Jordan did. (By the way, Wade, Bird, Magic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Thomas all were able to win without Phil Jackson, Wade against Phil Jackson, Bird and Magic for more than one head coach.) The Celtics pressured LeBron outside, however when he started they are driving they sagged towards the basket area and waited for him there, knowing perfectly well that neither his floater nor his pop-up jumper is all exceptional. Commanding the mid-frontcourt is essential to every superstar guard or forward that carried his team to some championship. The thing is, in the end, it's about the game a lot more than the lockerroom, the players more than the coach. And even the "elite" players can't be all grouped together as if their skill sets, let alone their psyches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], counseled me equal, and equally looking for the guidance of this or that Great Father.
Phil Jackson is a superb coach, to be certain, but due to the fact of the triangle offense he helped to design and efficiently orchestrates. Psychobabble is the refuge of those who don't really understand the game.
Outstanding post. Great teams do present challenges--there is just one ball and only one guy can control it within the fourth quarter. This wasn't a problem with Jordan, bit it sure was with Kobe and Shaq. Jackson first got it done.
To the stage raised by Cranky, the year Jackson coached the Bulls without Jordan may have been his finest coaching job. Only a truly awful foul call, which allowed the Knicks to win Game Six at the foul line with a handful of ticks left about the clock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], prevented the Bulls from reaching the finals.
Libertarius is right that LBJ has flaws in the game. I would include that he isn't that good a dribbler which his jumper, at any distance, isn't technically sound. Sometimes he gets hot and, of course, he is doing score lots of points, however these are weaknesses in his game.
His biggest weakness, however, isn't technical. His biggest weakness is the fact that he doesn't worry about winning championships how a other greats of the game have. Jordan once led his team to some playoff victory while struggling with a fever of 102 degrees. I don't know in regards to you, however i barely can get up out of bed with this temperature, let alone play basketball. He needed help from his teammates walking back to the bench sometimes outs. Isiah Thomas went on a scoring spree against the Lakers while hobbling on the badly ankle sprain. For LBJ, money and fame are what it's all about, not the NBA crown. He thinks he's already "the King."
Phil Jackson's a great, great coach. He got Dennis Rodman - in the colour of your day hairdo period - to operate inside the structure of the Bulls. Eventually Rodman reached be too much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Jackson was alone who might get him to become functional during this period. When LBJ had those terrible last three games in the Boston 2010 series, Mike Brown didn't call him out publicly for his detached performance. Jackson would have. That's one of the differences.
However, you can't win championships without having the requisite talent about the team. I understand this from coaching youth basketball: the growing season is mainly decided within the draft stage. You can, with poor coaching, ruin the talent, however, you can't win at the top levels without the talent.
Somewhat like horse racing, you can't win a race if your horse isn't fast, but the jockey makes up about a positive change of, I'm going to guess-estimate, 5-10%. In the realm of the NBA, 5-10% is more than all it takes.
Let me say to begin with which i speak as one almost wholly unaware of the overall game of basketball. I never literally game, except in gym class when I had to, and when my classmates wisely never, ever passed me the ball, and that i basically ran backwards and forwards on the court getting wheeled about through the other boys, and from time to time being required a foul when I didn't get free from someone's way. When I watch the overall game, I see a lot of tall guys in their underwear running backwards and forwards, passing the ball to one another, waving their arms around, pushing and elbowing each other, and shooting the ball at the basket. Every once in awhile, the referees call a foul. I have no clue why some pushing and elbowing is allowed and why it is sometimes forbidden. I see professional and top-flight college players doing things Constantly my gym teacher told me were against the rules - palming the ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], traveling. I see games with ten seconds left about the clock endure for an additional fifteen minutes or more. It seems that teams get to call a time-out after which inbound the ball from half court. Can you explain that?
But one thing I have clearly noticed, and I agree with Catherine: Basketball is still a team sport, and success depends upon all five players working together. I've observed that teams which have all five players cooperating almost always prevail against those that seem to consist of 2 or 3 players along with a handful of other guys in the game, like me in my gym class, basically running backwards and forwards in the game and never touching the ball. It surprises me this happens in the high end, however i have watched NBA final series games which look like a five-on-three game. This would seem to support Catherine's idea of the importance of the coach.
But of all I don't know about basketball, the one thing I understand the least may be the free toss in professional basketball. As I said, I never literally game, but I am absolutely, positively, sure, which i,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a guy of no athletic accomplishments to speak of, now during my very late fifties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could spend an hour or so each day practicing and achieve a free throw percentage of eighty or ninety percent. How come guys who are PAID to experience basketball, paid in the six, seven and often eight figure range, not do that? Why do I see such mediocre free throw percentages among professional players? Can someone explain this to me?
