Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt Episode
Sometimes, a show starts so well that the only way to go is down. Sadly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Panty and Stocking seems to be a textbook example of that.

Daten City is being rocked by weird happenings. Which gives the girls an excuse to dress up as schoolgirls and have some high school hijinks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although Panty seems to be having trouble understanding the word "infiltrate". Later, the girls' exploits are being turned into a big-budget movie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Panty's making the most of the star lifestyle she's suddenly got the chance to live - and she's gotten so cocky with it that she's pissing Stocking off. But the appearance of a genuine Panty porn flick threatens to ruin Panty's star value unless she can somehow find every copy.
The first episode of Panty and Stocking pretty much blew me away with its sheer audacity, but from there the only way was going to be down and I said in my review of episode one that I had my doubts about whether the show had the legs to last 13 episodes without running out of steam. This episode already bears out those worries - while it still did make me crack a laugh at several points and ultimately left me with a smile on my face, the "wow" factor has already gone, and that 's as much down to this episode simply not having the balls that the first episode did,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as it is to the idea already wearing thin.
The first segment highlights that perfectly. Being set in a high school, the potential to be truly outrageous is there at every opportunity, but that potential is never really used - instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we get a story that seems to be some sort of allegory on the quest for high-school popularity, mixed with comment on how certain dolls set the standard for people to live by. Fair enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the show's making some valid points there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I don't know that this is the series to be doing it in.
The second segment is better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although didn't quite give what I was expecting from the title. Again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's a moral here - don't ever let compromising material get onto the internet - but it's done in a much more slapstick and entertaining way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Panty and Stocking head off on their world tour to recover all available copies of Panty's porn flick. The story gives more of an opportunity for multiple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], short sight gags than the first segment did,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's becoming clear that that's really where the show's strengths are.
It's worth noting that the anime-style designs only make a return for Panty in this episode, and there's no transformation sequence for the girls - which many people thought was the highlight of the first episode,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and so may be disappointed not to see more of here. I can't say it bothered me either way.
In summary:
Panty and Stocking comes down from its opening-episode high with a noticeable bump,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and end up being fairly mediocre this time around after passing up some real gimme opportunities to be outrageous again - there are particular things that the series is good as,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it just doesn't play to them here.
