Organic goodness in the heart of Perth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The site used to be a scrap metal yard and a battery recycling plant, but has been transformed into a beautiful conservatory brimming with fruit trees and a wide array of vegetables.
An organic Farmers' Market is held on site every Saturday, predominantly featuring a range of fruit and veg stalls from local farmers.
Organic meats, eggs, dairy, baked goods, oils, clothing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], soaps and household products can also be purchased.
But the market's on-site garden is its greatest attribute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allowing customers to roam around and see exactly how their favourite veggies are grown.
Choosing to buy organic definitely hits the hip pocket harder than conventional produce. But if you want to eat chemical-free food with amazing taste,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then organics are the way to go.
Depending on the season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a lettuce will cost around $2.50, tomatoes $10/kg, silverbeet $3/bunch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spinach $3/bunch, mangoes $2.80, beetroot $7/kg, bananas $5/kg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], apples $5/kg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], oranges $5/kg and persimmons $5/kg.
Most of the stalls are certified organic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while the others are either in organic conversion or are deemed to farm ethically and sustainably.
The defining moment for these markets came in 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the decision was made to shift the stalls outside.
Before this move,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], PCF had good food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], good people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but little atmosphere under the confines of a large shed.
Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the markets are alive with a flurry of activity.
Live music appears on occasion, the chook pens are fun for the kids to visit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while the on-site cafe is a perfect place to chill out and relax.
And in October when the mulberry trees are fruiting, you're able to forage a delicious (and free) feed. It may be messy, but it's definitely worth it.
IF YOU GO
BEST WAY TO GET THERE: The markets are located at 1 City Farm Place, East Perth. When finding your way there, you can't go wrong with either car, bus or train. There is plenty of ticket parking nearby, a bus stop is situated right outside the front of the markets, while the train platform is about a minute's walk away.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The markets at Perth City Farm are open every Saturday from 8am until noon. Get there early to get the best produce. During the week, PCF also runs cooking and gardening workshops.
