I definitely am not just one of those ninnies who come here to whine about money being wasted on science. But, it strikes me that manned missions are extremely expensive for what they accomplish.
Perhaps we'd be better off focusing on proplusion technologies and robotic missions for the time being until we have a better propulsion system (chemical rockets require long trips and high fuel making everything much larger and much more expensive) or a space elevator. We're able to probably work out and build an area elevator for the price of a manned mission to Mars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which would make a later Mars mission easier and less expensive.
A space elevator would be a superb idea. But the problem is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if NASA started one they'd never finish it. They would spend billions then abandon the project and choose to do something else instead.

It will be a setback not to plan for a permanent moon base. The big difference from a moon base and also the space station is that astronauts could go out and do something useful.
They could explore the moon, experiment with building techniques, find ice and evenutally try to invent methods to grow food etc. Everything they did would also be there for the next astronauts.
