Hip and Bone make crocodile creations rock
There are so many possible leads to Carlos Fogelman's story: a grandmother who survived the Second World War as a slave labour seamstress for the Nazis, the success of his Hip and Bone line in 18 months and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enthrallingly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his family connections to a crocodile farm in his native Colombia.
There are 15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 crocs on the farm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Fogelman, 27,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which explains how he is able to sell croc totes and bags at fairly reasonable prices. A large tote sitting on a table in his sunny room at the Laboratoire Créatif in Mile End would sell for $30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 in New York,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fogelman says. He sells it for about $5,000. He sells a funky clutch for about $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],200. That clutch is made from one crocodile skin that costs about $180 to $200. In 18 months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the menswear line has landed at Holt Renfrew,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Simons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Influence U, Duo and Tozzi. Last season, the pair started a women's capsule collection.
"It's kind of in my blood," Fogelman said of the rag trade. His grandmother passed away some years ago. "I still have her sewing machine in my house."
The name Hip and Bone, bringing to mind the hip New York label Rag Bone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is something that has a deep message, according to Fogelman. "It's modern,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's contemporary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's hip. I feel like anybody from 15 to 50 could wear our clothes."
Everybody can do a trench coat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everybody can do a T-shirt, he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding he sources the fine Pima cotton from Peru through his family. T-shirts are collaborations with artists including Tim Barnard of En Masse and David Fuchs, with whom a pop-up shop is planned for New York in November.
The crocodile pieces are made in Colombia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], T-shirts in Peru and the clothing here in Montreal. About 70 per cent of production is in Montreal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fogelman said.
Fogelman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who studied marketing and finance at McGill and Concordia universities, is founder of the line.
Mesh also has a family background in textiles: His family owns a company that sorts mountains of old clothing. It's "the schmatte business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mesh deadpans when asked about the process.
