Galleria store additions include Arhaus
Edina's upscale Galleria mall on Monday announced the addition or expansion of several national retailers and local boutiques -- along with a handful of departures, too.
The biggest new arrival is Arhaus Furniture, an Ohio-based chain that is honored on selling high-quality items that use natural materials and hand-crafted design.
A 15,000-square-foot anchor slated for the Galleria's east end would be the chain's first store in Minnesota when it opens this fall. Minnesota will be the 17th state for Arhaus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that has locations in such trendy locales like the Meatpacking District in Nyc and Lincoln Park in Chicago.
Missouri-based Marmi, a European-influenced women's shoe and accessories retailer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will open single,980-square-foot store at the end of summer. And Milwaukee-based Allure Intimate Apparel will open an 1,800-square-foot flagship boutique at the mall this spring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its third in the Twin Cities after opening in Maple Grove and St. Paul.
"We will always be moving the pieces of the puzzle here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trying to figure out what's going to work best," said Jill Noack, Galleria's vice president and general manager. The mall is generally 95 % to 97 percent occupied,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an unusual occupancy rate for any retail mall inside a tough economy.
Departures include Schmitt Music, among the 35-year-old mall's original tenants, that will transfer to new space in Richfield, at 66th Street and Xerxes Avenue S., a little way from the current digs. Store manager Brian Cheese said the background music retailer and instruction studio simply needed more space, on a single level.
National maternity retailer A Pea within the Pod will close its Galleria outlet and open at the Mall of America under a different brand, Destination Maternity; Que Sera, a locally owned gift boutique and design studio, will move to downtown Excelsior.
Other stores will move within the mall. Papyrus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a purveyor of custom stationery and handmade cards, will move next to Tiffany Co. Audio and video retailer Bang Olufsen will open a showroom about the lower level.
Men's boutique Hammer-Made will double its size. The brainchild of local designer and entrepreneur Jason Hammerberg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it opened last year.
"We always try to keep Thirty to forty percent in our mix local,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Noack said. "That approach we take to can carve out a distinct segment so no one else will have precisely what we all do."
Retail expert Dick Grones, principal of Cambridge Commercial Realty, says adding local boutiques to the mix "spices it up and helps to create interest. This is their effort to carry on to be unique. It is a great center and they manage their tenants well."
Jim McComb, a retail consultant with McComb Group Ltd.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Galleria has been doing well within the economic downturn because its offerings appeal to a well-heeled clientele that isn't worried about pinching pennies. "They possess the kind of stores that have performed well in this market simply because they focus on more affluent households," he said.
Arhaus will join Gabbert's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Restoration Hardware and Crate Barrel at the Galleria, as well as nearby furniture outlets along France Avenue that include Macy's Furniture Gallery, West Elm and Room Board.
McComb says it makes sense to cluster similar kinds of retailers. "Clustering like kinds of businesses makes it much simpler for comparison shopping," he explained.
