DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES
NEW GLASGOW - A young boy stood barefoot in front of his home Tuesday and watched through tear-filled eyes as firefighters battled a blaze he helped start.
The boy saw first hand the devastating consequences playing with fire can have when he watched his home at 614 Brother Street Ext,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. go up in flames.
"I think it's important for people to know the cause of this fire because it reminds us that playing with fire can have devastating consequences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Mosher.
Three young children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who are all believed to be under the age of five, were pulled from the burning home by a relative.
The three children and the man were treated for smoke inhalation by EHS on scene. They were later taken to the Aberdeen Hospital and were released,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Clara Paris,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who lives two doors down from the home, said she saw the whole ordeal unfold.
"I heard all this screaming and when I looked I saw this man running down the street carrying the children. At first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I thought someone was hit by a car but then I saw the flames."
Paris's sister was also treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics on scene after she went to the door of the burning house to make sure everyone was out. "She was just overcome with smoke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Paris.
Curious onlookers gathered for more than an hour in front of the white and black bungalow watching firefighters battle the blaze,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Not long after New Glasgow Fire Department arrived, so did the children's mother. She was visibly distraught at first seeing her children. One boy was hooked up to a breathing mask inside the ambulance.
Mosher says there was extensive damage to the house. Firefighters had to break all the front windows to access the flames.
The mother and her children are currently staying in a hotel room provided for them by Canadian Red Cross. Disaster response volunteers have arranged for accommodations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meals and personal care items for the family.
"It's lucky they got out," says Carl Izzard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as he watched the scene from across the street. You can drop off non-monetary donations at the office of The News at 352 East River Rd., New Glasgow.
Pick up Thursday's edition of The News to see how the family is coping after the fire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I remember a family who's child started a trailer on fire that the family rented and because he woke up his parents and the family got out before it finished burning they made it look like he was a hero, because he woke up the rest of the family and they were able to get out alive. They listed him as a hero in the paper for saving his family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when he was the one who started the fire. I too live just up the street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], My eldest son is a first cousin of the family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they r very luck, and know how easy it is for children to get there hands on a light my 7 yr. Where was the caregiver during this time and how did they not see the children playing with a lighter? I understand that accidents happen and I'm not trying to critisize but this just goes to show that you can't turn you back on young children for a moment, you have to know what they are doing at all times. Thank God that they all got out safely but please people everywhere (whether parents or caregivers). WATCH THE CHILDREN!!
I know this sounds so blunt but this really could have ending quite tragically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's bad enough they had to watch their home and belongings go up in smoke.
