Shall we be Bad Friends for Serving Cheap Wine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Not too long ago, we recommended a few crowd-pleasing wines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that aren't only delicious, but completely affordable. With some priced at under $8 a bottle, some would even say our suggestions were downright cheap.
Heralding our own advice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we visited the LCBO to pick up a few bottles from that list to share with a few friends i was entertaining. But in the midst of shopping, something strange happened: we immediately felt guilty about serving inexpensive vino.
It didn't matter that they were excellent wines, or that people even drink the bottles ourselves as well as recommend these phones friends and strangers. For some reason, which surprises us still, we pay the bottles and went in search of something more costly for everyone instead.
Was it since the bottles originated from the General List of Ontario's LCBO, and not the exclusive Vintages section? Can it be because we'd already touted the value of these (cheap!) wines in print for all the world to determine? Were we worried our bargain bottles would make us look miserly and ungenerous? Bingo.
This really is shocking to us. We've always bragged about how exactly we find premium wines at premium prices for our private collections. So if we'll do it to live in, how come we not confident in treating our friends with similar philosophy?
What it came down to is the fact that whenever we host company,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we would put more focus on the dollar value, and taste and quality is available in second. Kind of different color leaves as putting out the "good" towels.
Now let's provide a bit of a disclaimer: our friends will always be generous with us. Among the group has enjoyed an effective media career and always edits everything we write of all time sent onto editors, and then we don't look grammatically challenged on the professional stage (and believe us, this really is no small feat).
Another has sprung for Leafs tickets -- more often than once -- and while she has never mentioned the cost,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm able to bet it was more than 7 bucks.
So we guess with those extraordinarily beneficial and lavish perks not far from our thoughts, our minds immediately warped into altruistic overdrive and we chose to see their benevolence and raise them an indulgence.
But is the fact that really the name from the game? Is the fact that what friendship is all about? Because one friend doles out for a swank evening on the town, or any other her professional services, would be the others then obliged to return the favour plus some?
I suppose within our minds, yeah. We don't want to appear as ungrateful, or ignorant to their efforts. But where will it stop? Sooner or later we'll be footing the balance for weekends in Vegas if this weird goodwill competition doesn't end.
So, in short, we should just overcome ourselves. We've fallen victim to the good-karma, what-goes-around-comes-around wheel. As we were really honest with this friends, as they justly deserve, we ought to just uncork the plonk, cause they'd probably like it more than the expensive stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anyway.
I would think that what you serve would have a great deal to do with the context you serve your wine in. Good wine is good wine. First of all, it has to be great for its type. If it isn't expensive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], good for you. Do you have to show them who made your watch, your car, as well as your eyeglasses to become accepted as their friend?
After that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are you having a casual get together, or a more formal dinner? When the food is very casual and simple, i quickly think it is an all natural the wines are the same. When the meals are more intricate and detailed, then possibly the wine should follow.
Where I started reading, I had been considering "is it about the kind of wine for the type of friend topic ?".
I understand that which you feel and the type of competition happening between friends to spread out in the best bottle. I remember serving a Montrachet to some special friend who always treated us very nicely (is Leflaive Chevalier 200 more Chevalier than the 2001 ?). Thankfully,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we got over it.
Unfortunately, to some, best means more expensive than better. My wife and I call them "label drinkers", meaning they're more interested in the label (and also the price) compared to the wine itself. Of course, we ourselves are label dinkers since we love to Grands Crus Classés but not at any price.
My point is that if your pals are truly friends (and people as if you are), you don't have to feel ashamed, they'll understand. Else,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], make new friends.
