Alexander Pieman Pearce film hard to stomach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Van Diemen's Land follows Pearce's 1822 escape from the penal settlement on Tasmania's Sarah Island with seven other convicts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the brutal dispatch of his fellow escapees.
Director Jonathan Auf Der Heide said he has been surprised people have reacted so strongly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The vomiting thing was a real surprise to me - we had two people vomit in New Zealand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a couple of people have fainted during the first killing scene,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Auf Der Heide said.
"But it's nowhere near as intense as a lot of the cinema that's out there today because we did shy away from the gruesome stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"What people find so gruesome about it is that it is approached as authentically as possible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"So there is no blood splatters or any of that stuff that we're used to . but when it becomes a reality,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], murder can be mundane and clumsy and ugly. And terrifying."
Auf Der Heide said it was always his intention to look beyond the violence in Pearce's story and examine what would make someone commit such horrendous atrocities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"You're exploring what it is to be human through being put into this extreme hardship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
"How do you react,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? That's the fascinating thing about the Alexander Pearce story,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Since he was 18,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Auf der Heide has been fascinated by the Irishman who was sent to Van Diemen's Land for the theft of six pairs of shoes.
Having grown up in Tasmania himself, Auf Der Heide learnt about Pearce's legend when he did a tour of Sarah Island and was struck by the contrast between the beautiful wilderness and the horror of what took place there.
He knew it would make a great movie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
