Retail post second month of gains in August to $40.3 billion
OTTAWA, Oct. 22 () -- Retail sales receipts in Canada rose 0.2 percent in August to $40.3 billion, adding to a 0.6 percent gain in July, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.In August, increased sales at grocery stores were partly offset by slower sales at motor vehicle dealerships and gas stations, the data agency said.Sales volumes also rose 0.2 percent, StatsCan said.Among retail subsectors, food and beverage sales rose 1.2 percent in the month with a 1.1 percent gain at grocery stores and a 2.1 percent increase in sales of beer, wine and liquor. Sales of clothes rose 1.9 percent -- 2.1 percent at apparel stores and 2.7 percent at shoe stores. Building materials sales also rose, climbing 1.1 percent, the third gain in four months.Sales shrank 0.5 percent at auto dealerships, which posted a second consecutive month of declines.
